In March 2013, Rwanda’s Ministry of Education formally launched the 26 projects supported by Innovation for Education Rwanda. This is a partnership between the governments of Rwanda and the United Kingdom. The goal is to increase the quality of education in Rwanda through innovation. The project proposal of VVOB Rwanda is one of the laureates for a grant. They will carry out a project that wants to improve the learning outcomes of basic education by strengthening the school leadership.

Official launch of Innovation for Education Rwanda

Innovation for Education RwandaThe opening ceremony took place on March 14th 2013 at the Groupe Scolaire Muhondo in Gicumbi District. The Minister of Education, Dr Vincent Biruta, and the Head of DFID Rwanda, Mr Mike Hammond, gave a speech. The event celebrated the innovations that are and will be tested and implemented in the classrooms, schools and other education institutions across the country over the next two years. This is a major opportunity to test new ideas to improve the quality of education in Rwanda, says Innovation for Education Rwanda.

The 26 projects have a strong focus on evidence collection. Each project will gather data to assess its impact on children's education. These findings will be judged against the cost effectiveness of the projects, and whether they can be scaled up by Government. The projects are grouped in six themes: effective teaching and learning, inclusive education, skills developments, accountability and empowerment, climate change and environment, and use of appropriate technologies in education.

Better learning outcomes through development of school leadership

The VVOB project got the title 'Coaching School Leadership to Achieve High Level Learning Outcomes'. It is already up and running and focuses on the development of the core competencies of the school leaders, in other words improving effective school leadership. This project wants to train and coach Sector Educational Officers so they can, in their turn, coach the Head Teachers in effective school leadership. In this way it wants to improve the quality of primary education and thus improve the learning outcomes of the pupils.
