There are over 1.2 billion adolescents in the world today, an all-time high. The vast majority of these 10-to-19-year-olds lives in lower and middle-income countries.
Adolescence is a transformational phase of human life, characterised by profound physical, cognitive, emotional, social and moral development. It is also a period of heightened risk and vulnerability, especially for girls.
Quality education is a pivotal factor in raising the future opportunities for adolescents. General secondary education and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) are the springboard for work and further learning.
VVOB is committed to strengthening the competences of those school actors that have the greatest impact on adolescent wellbeing, learning and opportunities: teachers and school leaders.
Together with these teachers and school leaders, we focus on three priority levers for change:
- Creating safe and supportive secondary schools
- Ensuring equity
- Ensuring smooth transitions to work and further learning
