The South African context
VVOB has collaborated with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the South African Council for Educators (SACE) since 2011 to improve professional development of teachers and school leaders.
VVOB’s support focuses on priorities of the department. In the earlier interventions this included professional learning communities, inclusive education in numeracy and literacy and climate change. Since then, our work has grown to include nurturing play-based learning in early childhood, improving home-language reading in the foundation phase, inducting newly qualified teachers and equipping teachers and school leaders to bring climate education into everyday practice.
We work closely with the Department of Basic Education, provincial departments, and the South African Council for Educators (SACE) to design and scale sustainable continuing professional development interventions. These use a blended model that combines self-paced online learning with in-person learning together in professional learning communities. Through professional learning communities, teachers and school leaders share experiences, test new ideas, and inspire each other; turning classrooms into places where all children can thrive.
