Preschool in CITIES: Learning in Da Nang, Vietnam

Summary

This publication documents the Communities of Practice Inspiring Teaching Innovations in the Early Education System in Vietnam (CITIES) project, implemented by VVOB in collaboration with the Da Nang Department of Education and Training (DOET). The project explored how preschool education can adapt to the challenges of rapid urbanisation and better support children’s well-being, learning, and participation in the urban environment of Da Nang City.

Through the use of process-oriented child monitoring and participatory research with teachers and school leaders, the project identified both educational and urban barriers to learning, such as limited parent-child interaction, a lack of safe play spaces, and excessive screen time. Teachers then tested innovative pedagogical approaches, including artistic and interactive drama methods, to foster socio-emotional development and resilience in children. The study highlights how early childhood education can contribute to sustainable urban development by turning cities into learning-rich environments for all children.
