Teaching Science in Effective Ways: Formative Assessment

Summary

This manual provides guidance for primary and lower secondary teachers in Cambodia on how to apply formative assessment effectively in science education. Developed by VVOB in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), it supports teachers in making classroom assessment a continuous, learner-centred process that enhances both teaching and learning.

The manual introduces the principles and purposes of formative assessment, outlines practical strategies for assessing scientific understanding, and provides examples of classroom activities and tools that help teachers gather evidence of learning. It also highlights how to give constructive feedback and adapt instruction to meet students’ needs. By integrating assessment with daily classroom practice, the manual promotes active learning, critical thinking, and improved student achievement in science.
