Combining Expertise for a Cohesive Approach
This collaboration is grounded in a mutual commitment to advancing climate change education, inspired by international frameworks such as the Paris Agreement of the UNFCCC, UNESCO's Greening Education Partnership, and the Sustainable Development Goals. By working together, VVOB and OCE aim to continue climate action on both individual and societal levels, address the risks and effects of climate change, and transform humankind's relationship with nature to reverse environmental degradation.
David Wilgenbus, Executive Director of OCE, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We are thrilled to join forces with VVOB. By combining our efforts, we can create a more robust and cohesive approach to climate education, ensuring that teachers and students are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of climate change." Christine Redmond, Global Lead of Engagement and Communication at VVOB, echoed this sentiment: "This partnership aligns perfectly with VVOB's mission to strengthen education systems. Together with OCE, we will work towards fostering climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable societies through education."

Supporting Educators and Students
OCE's mission centres on organising strong international cooperation among scientific bodies, NGOs, and educational institutions to educate current and future generations about climate change. This initiative will provide the tools necessary to counteract preconceptions and misinformation, preparing students to navigate and thrive in a changing world. VVOB is dedicated to enhancing the education sector as a strategic resource for transitioning to more climate-resilient and sustainable societies. By partnering with government institutions, VVOB provides professional development for teachers and school leaders, ensuring they are equipped to deliver high-quality climate education. Together, as a first cooperation VVOB and OCE are organising the 2024 Teacher’s COP, an international community event aimed at highlighting the work and voices of teachers on climate education at the heart of COP29.
Addressing the Global Climate Crisis
The partnership will focus on several critical areas, including the development of climate change education resources, teacher professional development, and the promotion of international partnerships dedicated to advancing climate change education. Additionally, it will offer professional development opportunities to enhance teachers' understanding and ability to teach climate change topics effectively.
As climate change continues to pose significant global challenges, this partnership between VVOB and OCE is both timely and crucial. By joining efforts, we aim to make a significant impact in the lives of educators and students, supporting them to become proactive agents of change in addressing climate issues. However, the burden of addressing climate change should not rest solely on educators, students and young people in general. It demands a multi-sectoral approach and government commitment to policies that protect people and the planet.
This partnership embodies VVOB's core values of respect for policies, people, and the planet, and innovation in facing complex challenges. It is an important step in realising our Learning Unlimited. 2030 strategy, ensuring every learner has access to quality education.
